If you’ve cast your eyes at the latest financials for AMD and Intel, you’ll have noticed that chip sales have nosedived. There’s no denying that our desktop purchases are fewer than what they were five years ago. Many blame the popularity in laptops, but a vast number of Inspiration Computers’ (former) clients have dispensed with PCs completely and now rely solely on phones and tablets for their everyday tasks.

Despite creaking sales and the sight of the colloquial fat lady warming her vocal cords, there are still machines to be built before she bangs out a finale aria. Luckily, Howard is not an opera fan and loves a desktop. He also likes us to build them in his particular style. The case needs to be black, unilluminated and have three internal 3.5in SATA bays. The performance needs to go like a greased rat down a drainpipe, but top of the priority list is that the whole thing must be silent.

Howard is a semi-retired photographer who has been digitising old rolls of film in Photoshop and Lightroom. One of the joys of his Adobe subscription was getting a stack of the latest features that his existing machine was too underpowered to utilise.
