An email from reader Glen Moore got me thinking this month. He was trying to share the power-control signal from a UPS with a Synology NAS and a Windows 10 desktop PC, but both needed to be connected over USB. And there was only one USB port on the UPS.
Over to Glen: “I have read that splitting a USB is not possible; however, one person said they had such a scenario working using a non-powered hub, but I couldn’t make it work. I also read of scripting options where one PC advises another, but that’s no good for a NAS. I read about NUT but didn’t manage to get that working, though admittedly it was complicated to the point I gave up. Surely such a seemingly simple thing can be achieved? It seems the only other option, certainly the simplest, is to buy a second UPS.”
I guess it’s a measure of how many years I’ve been messing about with networks, both big and small, that my first thought on this matter
