R102m blown on spyware probe

POLICE Minister Bheki Cele and the national police commissioner, General Fannie Masemola, may come under fire after the SAPS chief admitted in reply to parliamentary written questions that they were in “possession of illegal spy equipment”.

It was understood that R91 million was spent on the grabbers and R11 million on the specialised vehicles that carry them.

The 13 grabbers, as well as surveillance equipment that can access bank transactions and jam cellphone network signals, were purchased in 2020 without any authorisation from the relevant authorities for such acquisitions.

The ministers of justice, state security, communications and defence are responsible for the Regulation of Interception of Communications and Provisions
