WANTING TO OWN a Leyland P76 back in 1977 was akin to tramping around in the bush barefoot trying to get bitten by a brown snake.

People who heard you mention this strange affliction would back away slowly and those rated as close friends would sit you down over lunchtime beers and point out ‘sensible’ alternatives from the car pages of the morning paper.

I was determined though and while driving to work in my perfectly sensible Triumph 2000 I spotted the car in a Leyland dealer’s yard that would dominate my life and drain my wallet for six enthralling years.
