A SURVEY OF TABLETOP MINIATURE WARGAMES

The sound of nearby artillery strikes booms as a battered group of riflemen seek refuge in the remains of a bombed-out factory building. Suddenly a 20-foot-tall metal behemoth bursts through the wall and begins unloading machine gun fire into the hapless soldiers. Rolling for their armor saves, most of the unit survives, while suffering some modifiers to their attributes. The sergeant, carrying a massive energy hammer, charges at the mechanized monster to give his men a chance to fall back. Unfortunately, he rolls a “1” and is promptly stomped into the ground by eight tons of angry robot. Oh well, better luck next game.

 have been around for centuries, evolving from more abstract tactical games such as go and chess. Today there are dozens of varieties available at most tabletop gaming stores, with settings ranging from fantasy and science fiction to military history and zombie apocalypse. Games can be as small as two squads of soldiers battling within the tight confines of a structure or as large as vast military of ray guns.
