FRANCE’S FIRST FILMS

In 1895, two French brothers, Louis and Auguste Lumière, made At just 45 seconds long, it was the first film to be projected onto a screen for an audience. In 1902, French illusionist Georges Méliès made This science-fiction film had a big budget. It included fancy sets and groundbreaking special effects. During the next several decades in France, film studios controlled the creative process. But in the 1950s and 1960s, a movement—the French New Wave—changed that. French directors took more creative control and were able to tell more personal stories.
