A corn-sized 10 years ago, London Art Week has since grown into a great oak of the art world calendar, with over 50 dealers taking part this year, including, for the first time, dealers in exceptional decorative arts and rare books.
‘It's a wonderfully collegial event and includes both long-established galleries and emerging dealers, who put on special exhibitions just for LAW,' says event chairman, art dealer Stephen Ongpin.
This year's participants are to be found in the elegant locations of Mayfair, St James's, Kensington, Chelsea and Pimlico. Many of the galleries, including Stephen's own, Stephen Ongpin Fine Art in Mayfair, will be publishing catalogues to coincide with LAW. Exhibits are often up for sale, but the week is primarily a chance to look and learn. ‘That's one of the best aspects of LAW: the opportunity to visit galleries and dealers that are only open by appointment at other times of the year,' says Stephen. Rest assured the dealers like to talk too. ‘Like many of my colleagues, I'm passionate about my field and love to share my knowledge. Indeed, I can talk about drawings for hours!' londonartweek.co.uk
