Memories of a wild ride

IN BELATED RESPONSE to your Lamborghini Espada vs Ferrari 365 GTC/4 cover feature in Octane 233, I thought my own Espada encounter might amuse.

In 1970-71 I was in my third year of studying history at the recently opened University of Warwick, where the founding professor of history, JR Hale, had a reputation as a maverick. He was rarely at the university; as an Italian history specialist he was often in Florence and Venice.

The history course required us to spend the first term of Year Three in Venice, and at mid-term we were allowed one week off to travel. I decided to hitchhike to Naples, and a very pretty girl on the course asked to come with me. Her mother was Italian and her language skills were far superior to mine, so it was not a hard decision.
