CENTRAL
NamibRand Nature Reserve
This huge reserve (2 250 km²) is blessed with countless surreal landscapes, an abundance of plants and animals, and unrivalled photo opportunities. Whether you hike, self-drive or do a guided tour, you’ll be mesmerised by the plains, dunes and valleys on the edge of the Namib.
There are a few accommodation options in the reserve. The Family Hideout (#111, p 104) is an affordable choice. It’s a tastefully renovated farmhouse that’s perfect for small groups. There are also three private campsites with flush toilets and hot water, for the adventurous traveller who also likes a bit of luxury.

Gamsberg Pass
The Khomas Hochland is a high plateau in central Namibia. To get to the desert below, you have to drive down a mountain, and the most scenic way to do it is on the C26 dirt road from Windhoek via Gamsberg Pass. Gamsberg is the longest and highest pass in Namibia: It’s 2 347 m above sea level at the summit and you lose 1 100 m in altitude as you descend.
The bends will take you past grazing kudu, zebra and klipspringers, through a comparatively lush landscape that’s so beautiful it has been nicknamed the Garden Route of Namibia.
Give yourself enough time to take it slow – there are lots of places to pull over and look
