'I went for a sunny palette to dial up the charm'

'We both fell in love with the cottagey feel of this place the moment we stepped inside,’ says Lara Winter, recalling her and husband Nick’s hunt to find a forever family home. ‘I’m from Germany originally, but as I was pregnant, we wanted to move closer to Nick’s family in Wiltshire,’ she says, ‘and we both loved the traditional features, the beams and the exposed-brick walls, while the views across the fields were stunning.’

The couple particularly liked the fact that the house needed no building work, yet was full of potential for a cosmetic update, as they didn’t want to take on a huge renovation with a baby on the way. ‘In fact, we did very little in the first year while we concentrated on looking after William,’ says Lara, who did however inject personal touches to make the place feel like home. ‘I began by adding lots of
