Travel, for most, is restricted to school holidays, or those once an educational stage three-monthers. Some families, though, have packed up and taken to travelling as a way of life. Boats, campervans, caravans, even a bus, plus homeschooling and new places, equals happiness.
3 KIDS, 2 DOGS AND 1 OLD HOUSE
The Alfino family set off in 2018 in a 1974 VW campervan (with an air-cooled engine – which proved rather problematic), planning a year on the road travelling the country with their three children, aged five, seven and eight.
‘We felt like we were being sucked into this consumer-driven lifestyle, not spending enough time as a family making good connections with each other and also wanting to make the most of the beautiful country that we live in,’ says Cindy.
‘Seth, an architect, redesigned the interior so that we could fit all five of us into it. Seth and I used the main bed at the bottom, the girls had a double bed above the driver's area and Knox had a spot in the kitchen that converted to a bed.
‘We did a lot of adventuring, hiking and making sure we saw the best things in all the spots we visited. The idea was that we would do it for a full year, but our van just wasn't up to the challenge and broke down too many times to
