Head waving shouldn't be a cause for concern

Q My five-year-old waves her head around with her mouth open and shakes her lips when she's tied up outside her stable. Should I be worried?

Debbie says: In a healthy horse who hasn't just sniffed or licked anything unusual this behaviour sounds like submissive foal snapping and shouldn't cause any concern. Most horses grow out of it by two to two-and-a-half years old. But some with less social experience early in life may not so more time at pasture with other horses can help.
