Turn away versus getting stuck straight in

Q How long should I wait before I start to reschool my ex-racehorse? Her last race was about amonth ago. Some people have said to start straight away, but others have advised that she needs time turned away first.

Fred and Rowena say: There are differing views on this. Some people insist that turning away is an absolute necessity, while others take the view that keeping a degree of the routine that the horse is used to actually aids the settling in process as the management changes won't be as dramatic while the horse is having to adjust to new people and new surroundings.
