AP: What can you tell us about the society’s foundation and how it came to be? For example, who started it, and why?
HB: The Stereoscopic Society was founded in 1893, one of its founders being its first Secretary, Charles Bertie Di Veri, who was a musician and music teacher. Whilst the reasons for its foundation have been lost in the mists of time, one can assume it is safe to say that it was founded to bring 3D photographers together to exchange images and ideas. Indeed, it was originally called The Stereoscopic Postal Exchange Club, where members could make good use of the (at the time!) excellent postal service where next-day delivery seemed to be the norm. The club changed its name to The Stereoscopic Society in 1896. It is therefore the oldest stereoscopic club in the world and celebrates its 130th anniversary this year.
