ON FRAMING YOUR STITCHING

Picture perfect

The right frame can make all the difference to the final look of a stitched piece. With some planning, you’ll find the best fit for the design and space you intend to hang it.

With wood, metal, plastic or even fabric frames to choose from, you’ll first want to decide where it will be displayed – a cosy living room, airy kitchen, stylish bedroom, or perhaps a dark hallway? Or, if it’s a gift, where would your recipient hang it?

Next, select the style and colour to coordinate with existing décor, but avoid completely matching it to the paint or wallpaper. Instead, pick up on a complementary shade, perhaps to match furniture, a rug or curtains. Remember it needs to suit the stitched design too, so always have this to hand when making decisions. Consider whether your design lends itself to a decorative style, simple wood-effect, or a solid colour. You can always upcycle a plain wooden frame by painting it yourself.
