COUNCIL SUPPORT FOR FARMING
In last November’s issue of The Field, I argued that unless we stand up and challenge the animal rights agenda at every level, we will wake up and find that what was once a niche cause has become a new orthodoxy. My piece [Comment, November 2022] focused on several local councils, including Oxfordshire, Oxford City and Enfield, implementing bans on meat and dairy items at council events. Their ludicrous justification was that they needed to ‘set an example’ for the public to follow as part of efforts to tackle climate change.
Since the publication of that article, Edinburgh City Council and Norwich City Council have joined Haywards Heath in signing up to the Plant-Based Treaty. Taken literally, the treaty calls for no expansion in any part of the livestock farming or aquaculture sectors. Tax hikes on meat and fish. Government-sponsored propaganda advocating veganism. And in a direct attack on freedom of choice, a transition to plant-based meal plans in schools, hospitals, nursing homes and government
