THE PAST 170 years have borne witness to many historic events: two World Wars, the accession of seven British kings and queens and the swearing in of 33 prime ministers. After 17 decades, The Field celebrates its heritage and continues to champion and participate in every aspect of British fieldsports and country life. Here is just a snippet of our history and how we told it.
1853 The Field is founded by RS Surtees under the guidance of Editor Mark Lemon as a weekly publication known as The Field or Country Gentleman’s Newspaper.
1854 The Field sends its own correspondent to the Crimean campaign and the 18 November 1854 issue contains a selection of personal narratives of those who took part in the Charge of the Light Brigade.
The following account comes from a Dragoon officer of the light brigade written on 27 October: ‘You will be glad to hear that I am alive after our tremendous affair of the 25th [October]. We were ordered to charge some Russian batteries and cavalry, and the light brigade went down, the 17th and 13th leading in the line; the 11th were ordered to hang a little back as a support, and the 4th
