A STIRLING STAY

here are any number of lovely places to stay when visiting the Trossachs, the celebrated district of Scotland made famous by the writings of Sir Walter Scott: it could be Callander, Aberfoyle, or Doune. But, for me, the most magical location without any doubt is the Lake of Menteith. It’s worth mentioning from the outset that no-one knows for sure why this body of water acquired the name ‘lake’. Evidently it remained a Scottish loch until the 19th century. It may have been the fame of Sir Walter Scott’s that granted it this name, or it may just have been a cartographer’s error: for whatever reason the name remains.
