HELL ON EARTH
This harrowing image of a pregnant woman being rushed through the war-torn streets of Ukraine’s Mariupol made global headlines last year, capturing the terrifying and tragic reality of the Russian invasion. The photo, taken by Evgeniy Maloletka two weeks after the invasion began, on February 24 last year, shows 32-year-old Iryna Kalinina, one of the tens of thousands of civilians caught in the crossfire. Iryna was carried from a maternity hospital bombed in an airstrike. Her baby was stillborn, and half an hour later Iryna also died of her injuries.
