THE STORY OF Greeny — the 1959 Gibson Les Paul Standard made famous by Fleetwood Mac founder Peter Green, later owned and played by blues-rock great Gary Moore and, since 2014, in the possession of Metallica’s Kirk Hammett, who has used it onstage and in the studio with the heavy metal icons — is practically mythic in modern guitardom. In addition to its esteemed lineage of owners, venerated year of production and coveted (if now faded) sunburst finish, the guitar’s idiosyncratic tone — courtesy of a backwards-installed neck pickup and unique out-of-phase middle-position voicing — has made it a one-of-a-kind model.
Until now, that is. Brand new from Gibson is the , available in Custom Shop and USA Standard versions. The storied guitar brand first partnered with Hammett in 2021, and at that time it was announced that the pair would collaborate on a variety of models for both via MRI scans, X-rays and all manner of precise measuring and testing, recreating the guitar down to the most minute detail.
