4 Shelter Magazines

Creating structure makes me think one of two things: First, I think of writing structure, whether we’re talking poetry, prose, email messages, or whatever else can be written. Second, I think of actual physical structures—like houses and other buildings. In magazine publishing, these are often referred to as “shelter magazines” (or home-and-garden publications).

Many of these shelter magazines thrive on high-impact photography and beautiful homes and buildings. The editors usually wish to have exclusive rights to cover these structures and connect the editorial and photography to a certain lifestyle—whether that’s cutting-edge architecture or a more earthy, country aesthetic.
