Why ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’?

We’re not telling you to be quiet: is short for Sonic Hedgehog gene. The name came from Dr Robert Riddle, who wanted to break the mould when the other developmental biologists in his lab at Harvard Medical School decided to name each newly detected gene after a (real) species of hedgehog. The three previous to were named Indian hedgehog, moonrat hedgehog and desert hedgehog.
