ANCIENT TRAVELLERS IN SCOTLAND

The Greek writer Plutarch recorded that in 83 CE, Demetrius of Tarsus stopped over in Delphi on his journey home from Britain where he had been tasked by the Emperor Domitian with undertaking a voyage of discovery. His task had been to explore the nearest islands, to make enquiries and observations. Demetrius said that there were many deserted islands around Britain but holy men lived on the ones that were occupied and these men were regarded by the Britons as sacrosanct.
