I can’t be sure I was 100 per cent prepared for Raffles on the Palm. That might have been because I was not 100 per cent prepared for Dubai. The journey was straightforward and the airport was mightily slick; it was on the car journey across the emirate that this rather sheltered 36-year-old Londoner experienced a culture shock.
