ROSE: IS YOUNGEST BEST?

When it comes to rosé wine, is it as simple as ‘the younger the better’? Elena Stevenson, by email

The short answer is ‘no’. Rosé is a colour rather than a category of wine, and includes fresh, easy-drinking, fruity wines that are best enjoyed young, as well as complex wines that get better with age. Much like a red or white, ageworthiness will depend on winemaking (maceration time, oak treatments, etc), terroir, vintage and quality of the overall wine – as well as the finished bottles being kept
