Colorado shakes
As the Bard’s adage goes, “Parting is such sweet performances. Hewn from pink sandstone quarried near Boulder’s Flatirons, the Rippon has served as the iconic open-air home of the Colorado Shakespeare Festival since 1958. With major renovations looming for the century-old Hellems Arts and Sciences Building complex, CSF’s 66th season will be the last to grace the stage in its original form. While the festival will continue in the indoor theater during construction in 2024, this summer is the last chance to enjoy the outdoor venue as it was first imagined. Before the original Rippon, like a brief candle, flickers out at the end of this summer, CFS pays homage to its classic space with a slate of classics—plus a dash of the new. In homage to its valedictory season, CSF is staging four of the Bard’s best-known plays from across his career, including and , as well as a new musical farce based on an 18th-century Italian comedy. “We really wanted to make it a celebration of the most towering works of Shakespeare, created when he’s at the height of his career,” says CSF’s producing artistic director Tim Orr. “Come on the journey with us.”
