SATURN has long been known as the planet with the most moons, but in February scientists discovered an extra 12 moons around Jupiter, bringing its total to 95. Now Saturn has overtaken Jupiter again and reclaimed its title as the planet with the most moons.
Scientists recently found 62 new moons around the ringed planet. The new satellites (see Word of the Week) were discovered by an international team of researchers using a method called shift and stack.
They shift a set of telescope pictures taken in sequence against the motion of a moon in the sky. Then they stack a bunch of photos on top of one another to enhance the signals they pick up from the moon, allowing them to spot moons that are too faint to be seen in a single image. Some new moons discovered around Saturn are as small as 2,5km in diameter.
