TO The VALe

The tarps are packed, the iconic strings of lanterns have been pulled down, the only movement now at Christchurch’s notorious Bowenvale jumps is the slowly encroaching weeds and grass swaying in the breeze.

The only bikes that come close to these once-hallowed trails are mountain bikes whizzing out of Victoria Park, the riders shaking their heads, grimacing, and offering some morose commentary to their mates about the sad situation that’s unfolded over the past six months.

Yep, it’s official - after almost 20 years of good times, insane moments and fostering lifelong friendships, “The Vale” has officially been closed down.

You might remember our feature back in issue 85 that detailed the storied history of this picturesque spot. At that time, it seemed likely the one-hectare property housing the jumps was going to be sold, but nothing was certain.
