GOING FOR GOLD

The beach was crowded with surfers, bodyboarders and paddlers. Perhaps a sunny evening before the August bank holiday wasn’t the best time to go fishing, but I was still confident of sport.

I was at Rhossilli beach, a three-mile stretch of unbroken sand that faces due south-west from the end of the Gower peninsular in South Wales. It’s a classic storm beach that once held the Welsh shore-caught bass record, a huge fish of over 16lb. The bass are best fished when a decent surf is running but today the sea was calm
