The title translates as ‘Contempt’, directed by Fritz Lang (playing himself), no less - towards being a sword-and-sandals adventure; his wife Camille (Brigitte Bardot) hates his weakness, he hates himself, and their marriage crumbles. Fascinatingly, mirrors Godard’s own tussles with his producers, and he moved into more experimental territory thereafter.
