It’s interesting to think that, while VW has managed to spawn two of the most beautiful cars ever to grace our blue and green dot, neither of them came directly from the Volkswagen factory. One was produced by coachbuilder Wilhelm Karmann GmbH (the Karmann Ghia, of course) and the other came from Karosseriewerke Joseph Hebmüller Söhne, an example of which you’re looking at right now.

Credit should, of course, be given to Volkswagen for having the foresight to engage with the booming coachbuilding industry of the time with its incredibly adaptable platform, in the process gifting us all with automotive greatness.
