’55 AUTOCROSS OVAL

“I wanted to build an Outlaw Porsche, but it was out of my budget, even way back in 2010”

Why is the word offbeat in the title of this feature? Well, because during my ’phone conversation with Brian, we talked about how the car has been received on the California VW and Autocross scenes. Brian reported that the Autocross guys love it, and can’t believe he has managed to set up a swing axle suspension to handle this well, but some of the VW purists aren’t quite so enamoured with his efforts.

So, where does acceptance end and frowning begin? It’s considered okay to build a Vintage Speed car out of an early model, provided the performance upgrades suit the car’s age. Many of the bolt-on parts come from early Porsches, which is where some of the confusion comes in.

Why confusion? Well, when you look at the early Porsche scene, and some of its more well-known car builders, it’s clear that some serious modifications are coming into the realms
