Lisa Mieran has a simple summation of her spectacular house. “We dreamt this up and then did it,” the Queenslander says. She and her husband, Gary, not only designed the home, they undertook much of the build themselves, too. Rising organically like a rocky outcrop from the Gympie landscape, if this is what humble ‘amateurs’ can achieve, it puts professionals on notice.

The couple own a local business called Akyrah Kitchens – Gary is also a trained cabinetmaker – and know all about layouts, finishes and, above all, functionality, but here they have cooked up
