You may be forgiven for thinking that not much more can be written about the medium of watercolour but you will be surprised. The thing about artists is that they are creative and that they are continuously looking at new ways to express themselves. It is inevitable that they will want to look at the medium itself for innovative ways to extend their creativity.

Watercolour has a long tradition that purists love to maintain and enjoy. Why tinker with a way of painting that has produced so many masterpieces through history and by so many civilisations? I have been painting in watercolour for more years than I can tell and I must confess I am always on the lookout for new ways of exploiting it.

The purpose of this article therefore is to point you towards some of the discoveries I have made and hopefully to inspire the beginner and expert alike.

To tinker properly one needs to know the basic ingredients that make up the paint.
