‘Learning to surf changed everything’
LIZZY KAY, 60, from Cornwall, has her own gardening business
‘The year before my 50th birthday I felt like I was at a crossroads. I’d started going through the menopause, my marriage was coming to an end and – at 10 and 15 – my children were needing me less and less. I remember thinking, “Who am I now?”
It was then that I decided to just go for it: experience new things, make new friends and throw myself into something I’d always wanted to try but never had the time for. So that’s how, at 49, I tried surfing for the first time – and it changed my life.
I’d lived in Cornwall for the best part of two decades, right on the coast in a small town where surfing is a huge part of the community. The Bude Surf Life Saving Club had justwomen’s training sessions, so I went along and signed up.
