Gather your supplies

AUSTRALIAN SUPERFINE MERINO BY CLECKHEATON 8 PLY 65g: Cowl 3 balls (Boysenberry – 79), Beanie 2 balls (Boysenberry – 79); 4mm crochet hook; pompom maker (for Beanie); wool needle for sewing in ends

Tension Cowl and beanie have been designed at a tension of 17tr and 10.5 rows to 10cm over tr fabric. To work a tension square, using 4mm hook, make 27ch. Work 15 rows treble fabric. Fasten off. Check your tension carefully. If less sts to 10cm use a smaller hook, if more sts use a larger hook.

Special abbreviation

5tr cluster = * yoh and draw up a lp in next st, yoh and draw through 2 lps, rep from * 4 times in same st, yoh and draw through all 6 lps on hook.

Cowl

Using 4mm hook, make 4ch (leaving a 10cm end).

Foundation round Miss 3ch (counts as 1tr), yoh, insert hook under 2 strands of next ch, draw lp through, yoh and draw through 1 lp (ch made), (yoh and draw through 2 lps) twice (tr made), * yoh, insert hook under 2 strands of ch made, draw lp through, yoh and draw through 1 lp (ch made), (yoh and draw through 2 lps) twice (tr made), rep from * 132 times, sl st in 3rd ch at beg to form a ring, taking care not to twist Foundation sts… 135tr.

1st round 1ch, 1dc in same st as sl st, (5tr cluster in next tr, 1dc in each of next 3tr) 24 times, turn (to work from inside of ring), Crab st in back lp only of each rem 38tr, turn, sl st in first dc.

2nd round 3ch, (1tr in 5tr cluster, 1tr in each of next 3dc) 24 times, 1dtr in back lp of each of next 38tr from Foundation round (working behind Crab sts), sl st in 3rd ch at beg.

3rd round 1ch, 1dc in same st as sl st, 1dc in each of next 2tr, (5tr cluster in next tr, 1dc in each of next 3tr) 23 times, turn, Crab st in back lp only of each rem 40 sts, turn, sl st in first dc.

4th and foll alt rounds 3ch, 1tr in each st to Crab sts, 1dtr in back lp of each st behind Crab sts, sl st in 3rd ch at beg.

5th round 1ch, 1dc in same st as sl st, (5tr cluster in next tr, 1dc in each of next 3tr) 23 times, turn, Crab st in back lp only of each rem st, turn, sl st in first dc.

7th round 1ch, 1dc in same st as sl st, 1dc in each of next 2tr, (5tr cluster in next tr, 1dc in each of next 3tr) 22 times, turn, Crab st in back lp only of each rem st, turn, sl st in first dc.

9th round 1ch, 1dc in same st as sl st, (5tr cluster in next tr, 1dc in each of next 3tr) 22 times, turn, Crab st in back lp only of each rem st, turn, sl st in first dc.

11th round As 7th round, working 5tr cluster patt 21 times.

13th round As 9th round, working 5tr cluster patt 21 times.

15th round As 7th round, working 5tr cluster patt 20 times. Cont creating diagonal line, working 5tr cluster patt 20 times in 17th round, 19 times in 19th and 21st rounds, then 18 times in 23rd and 25th rounds and so on until Cowl measures approx. 22cm from beg or near end of 3rd ball, ending with a 4th patt round. Fasten off.

To make up

Join beg and end of Foundation round with yarn end.

Beanie

(Begin at crown)

Using 4mm hook, make 2ch.

1st round Miss first ch, (2dc, 2htr, 16tr) in last ch, do not join with a sl st as Beanie is worked in a spiral… 20 sts.

2nd round (2tr in next st, 1tr in next st) 10 times… 30tr.

3rd round (2tr in next tr, 1tr in each of next 2tr) 10 times… 40tr.

 4th round (2tr in next tr, 1tr in each of next 3tr) 10 times… 50tr.

 5th round (2tr in next tr, 1tr in each of next 4tr) 10 times… 60tr.

6th round (2tr in next tr, 1tr in each of next 5tr) 10 times… 70tr.

7th round (2tr in next tr, 1tr in each of next 6tr) 10 times… 80tr.

8th round (2tr in next tr, 1tr in each of next 17tr) 0 (4) times, 1tr in each of next 75 (3) tr, 1htr in each of next 2tr, 1dc in each of next 2tr, sl st in next tr… 80 (84) sts. Rem of Beanie is worked in joined rounds.

9th round 3ch, 1tr in each st to end, sl st in 3rd ch at beg. Rep last round until Beanie measures 18 (19) cm from beg.

Beg band

1st round (worked left to right) 1ch, Crab st in front lp only of each tr to end, sl st in back lp of first Crab st.

2nd round (worked right to left) 3ch, 1tr in rem back lp of each tr (working behind Crab sts) to end, sl st in 3rd ch at beg. Repeat last 2 rounds 5 times… 12 rounds band patt in all. Fasten off.

PANDA CRYPTO 8 PLY 150g: 5 balls (2 Rose Garden); 4.5mm circular knitting needle (100cm long); lockable stitch marker; wool needle for sewing seams

NOTE This blanket is worked on larger needles than usually recommended for this yarn.

Tension 19.5 sts and 34 rows to 10cm over patt, using 4.5mm needles. Correct tension is not essential, however stated measurements and yarn quantity are based on this tension.

Mitred panel

(Make 2)

Using 4.5mm circular needle, cast on 2 sts.

NOTE A circular needle is used to accommodate the large number of sts. Work backwards and forwards in rows throughout.

1st row K1, inc in next st.

2nd row P3.

3rd row Inc in first st, K1, inc in last st.

4th row K5.

5th row K1, (inc in next st) twice, K2.

 6th row P7.

NOTE Place stitch marker on centre st, moving it up in every row.

Beg mitred patt

 1st row Knit to one st before marked centre st, (inc in next st) twice, knit to end.

2nd row Knit.

3rd row As 1st row.

4th row Purl. Rep last 4 rows once… 15 sts.

9th row As 1st row.

10th row Knit to one st before centre st, inc in next st, K1, inc in next st, knit to end.

11th row As 1st row… 21 sts.

12th row Purl. Last 12 rows form patt. Rep last 12 rows 15 times, then first 4 rows once… 235 sts. Remove stitch marker.

Next row Cast off first 117 sts, knit to end. Cont on these 118 sts.

Next row Purl. Work 2 rows garter st. Work 2 rows stocking st. Rep last 4 rows until same length as Mitred patt to cast off, ending with 2 rows stocking st. Cast off loosely (knitways on right side).

Side borders

Using Mattress stitch (page 36), join panels tog, foll assembly diagram. With right side facing and using 4.5mm circular needle, knit up 212 sts evenly across one side edge. Work 18 rows garter st. Cast off loosely (knitways on wrong side). Repeat on opposite edge.

Upper and lower borders

With right side facing and using 4.5mm circular needle, knit up 230 sts evenly across edge. Work 18 rows garter st. Cast off loosely (knitways on wrong side). Repeat on lower edge.

To make up

Sew in ends.

Tension 22 sts and 30 rows to 10cm over stocking st, using 4mm needles. To work a tension square, using 4mm needles, cast on 33 sts. Work 44 rows stocking st. Cast off loosely. Check your tension carefully (page 37). If less sts to 10cm use smaller needles, if more sts use larger needles.

Jumper Back

Using 3.25mm needles, cast on 106 (118-130-138-150) sts.

1st row K2, * P2, K2, rep from * to end.
