Even in motorsport – this most complex of pursuits – explanations for success can be very simple.

Anticipation was high when the TCR UK tin-top contest was getting going for its 2018 debut. Plenty of championships for the new low-cost TCR concept had been established internationally, and were thriving. Word was that the new UK version was “inundated” with interest.

But in the event TCR UK struggled for grid numbers, which slumped as low as three in early 2019.
