The Christie’s New York live auction of South Asian Modern and Contemporary Art on March 22 during Asia Week brought in just under USD 12 million from 70 lots, further boasted by online sales (March 15–28) of an additional 120 works, netting just under USD 1 million. Manjit Bawa’s untitled 2004 rendering of the multiarmed Hindu goddess Durga atop a lion—previously sold in 2010 and again in 2014 at Christie’s New York—was the top seller at USD 1.98 million. The only other seven-figure item was FN Souza’s pre-independence painting (1946) at USD 1.7 million.
