Melati Suryodarmo: “Passionate Pilgrim”

In “Passionate Pilgrim,” Melati Suryodarmo brings her unrelenting, physically challenging performances to Ikon Gallery in Birmingham. Inspired by Javanese cultural traditions, and a disciple of key (2012), in which she grinds charcoal with a stone rolling pin for 12 hours, expressing her feelings of cultural alienation. Suryodarmo is collaborating with a UKbased domestic worker advocacy group on a new version of (2010), while gallery-goers can view her recent video works, past projects, and new collaborative installations.
