e sailed the West Solent Restricted One Design (WSOD) back in the summer of 2021 with owners Chris Preston, chairman of the RYA, and his wife Victoria. The WSODs, as they’re known, are one of the most revered of all the slim, coastal racing dating from 1924. They are 34ft 8in (10.6m) long and you don’t get an awful lot of boat for the length, but that is the cost of such elegance. The class saw quite a revival, with restorations and at least one new build, from the mid-90s to the mid-2000s, so clearly the appeal is still strong for the absolute purist. Two more are mid-rebuild as we speak, and there should be a good showing at the class centenary next year. is mostly a case of ‘what you see is what you get’; accommodation is basic, but there are two full-length berths below. The other thing to note is the good condition. was rebuilt from 1996-8 and 2007-8 by Adrian Riva and has been looked after professionally by Clare Lallow in Cowes for the last three of four years. For racing and regattas, it’s hard to imagine anything more head-turning at the size.
