Magnus Maximus (r. ca. 383-388) was originally a usurper in Britain. He went on to invade the Continent, defeat and put to death the Western emperor Gratian, and seize most of the Western Empire. In 384, after negotiations with the Eastern emperor Theodosius I (r. 379-395), Maximus agreed not to overthrow the teenaged Valentinian II (r. 388-392), Gratian's half-brother, who was allowed to retain control over Italy while Maximus was
