On 23 June 1973, the highly promising Gerry Birrell was killed when a punctured tyre pitched his Chevron B25 off the road at Rouen and into a crash barrier – and underneath it. Such was the brutality of motorsport in those days. The French organisers had already been lobbied about the insecure mounting of their supposedly protective measures, yet everyone turned a blind eye and qualifying for the following day’s round of the European Formula 2 Championship proceeded until
