EXTENSION ESSENTIALS
If you’re extending your home, you shouldn’t rely on your buildings insurance or your builder’s insurance while the work is being done.
Standard home insurance is designed to cover you as the owner, not as a builder. The building of extensions, renovations and alterations are all normally excluded from home insurance policies. Any insurance your builder holds is designed to protect them, not you or your home.
Sarah Smith, head of home underwriting at LV General Insurance, says: “If you’re having structural work completed, this can put your home at higher risk so your insurers will want to know about this and if you don’t tell them, then there’s a risk you could invalidate your insurance.”
