Lawns are traditionally the place for summer relaxation but a better use of the space is to create additional entertaining areas with a restful feel that can be enjoyed year round. Define the space with one standout feature that enhances relaxation, a neutral palette and sympathetic planting.

To help coalesce the internal and external spaces for this home, landscape designer James Doyle designed a distinctive water feature. ‘We did this by cutting three niches into the stone and outfitting the central niche with a scupper that feeds the flow into the rill,’ he says. ‘This design looks serene surrounded by cubed linden trees, warm-toned grasses and sheared boxwood hedges that help anchor the scheme.’
