When the railway arrived in Haslemere in 1859, artists were suddenly drawn to the area, attracted by, in Haslemere in 1871, described it as ‘…a land of pine woods and copses, village greens and heather-covered (hills), with the most delicious old red or grey brick timbered cottages nestling among creeping roses.’
