Pint-sized Petworth, in West Sussex, is surely home to a greater number of antiques shops per square mile than any other corner of England. With most of them run by discerning, experienced dealers and buyers, it's long been a popular stop-off on the antiquing trail in the South East. Especially in May, when Petworth Park Antiques & Fine Art Fair sets up stall in a huge marquee in the parkland of Petworth House and draws 60 or so additional specialist traders to town (this year's event runs from 19th–21st May; for more detail see p106 or visit petworthparkfair.com).
