THE ANTIQUE
Royal commemorative ceramics
Royalists among us may be thinking about buying a commemorative mug or plate to marktea cups and saucers are made to celebrate big events, particularly coronations, jubilees and marriages. In the 19th century when pottery and porcelain became more affordable and accessible to everyday folk, these items proliferated and continued to be popular throughout the 20th century. Big names in the collectable field include Wedgwood, Minton and Royal Winton, with designs reflecting the fashions of the time, both in shape and decoration, making each one a tiny time-capsule of social history. At auction, expect to pay anything from £100 upwards for an antique or vintage piece of quality.
