Antidepressants and pain relief
Newer antidepressants may help with pain relief, according to recent studies. Some older medications, such as amitriptyline, have long been used in pain management, but 26 studies with more than 25,000 participants have compared newer antidepressants with a placebo. Evidence was found in 11 comparisons (seven of which looked at SNRI-type antidepressants, including duloxetine and venlafaxine), demonstrating reduction in musculoskeletal pain (chronic low back pain and osteoarthritis), fibromyalgia and neuropathic pain conditions (peripheral diabetic neuropathy).
