Australian Country

island wander

Conservationist Cassandra Sasso breathes deeply on the lofty grass-tousled hill. Beyond, white caps dance across the Great Australian Bight. Below, the golden sweep of Snelling Beach becomes their captive audience. And behind, the native pigface Cassandra planted only this morning hides her pod of newborns, siblings to the first-born WanderPods she co-founded with Cameron Crispin on Queensland's Scenic Rim. It's a moment of acknowledgement on this day of the launch. Barefoot, on the northern sands of this world-renowned island destination, Cassandra and her first guests share a welcome-to-country smoking ceremony with Ramindjeri elder, Mark Koolmatrie of Kool Tours.

After SeaLink's 45-minute crossing of Backstairs Passage from Cape Jervis on the mainland, and a 90-minute drive between Penneshaw and the WanderPods, time slows to a decelerated beat. Strategically planted for their sunrise or sunset aspect, each discreet WanderPod absorbs nature through its floor-to-ceiling glass façade.
