IT IS illegal for taxi operators to force commuters to use only their mode of transport, which is done out of desperation to keep their “struggling” businesses afloat, national taxi associations’ umbrella bodies have admitted.
This conduct has caused havoc and disrupted schooling in some parts of the country. It has led to school governing bodies and scholar transport operators expressing disdain at the behaviour of taxi operators forcing children to use taxis to get to and from school.
While claiming ignorance of operators’ “thuggery”, the National Taxi Alliance (NTA), which has 13 affiliated taxi associations, says the country’s biggest, multi-billion-rand transport industry has been infiltrated by hooligans masquerading as operators.
